The third vessel ordered by Northern Lights, which will be powered by wind propulsion technology, is being built by Chinese shipbuilder Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore

The rotor sails will be supplied by the Finnish wind propulsion system maker Norsepower.

Northern Lights is a carbon capture and storage joint venture between oil majors Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies.

This third Northern Lights liquid carbon dioxide (LCO2) carrier will have a capacity of 7,500 cbm and will be equipped with an LNG dual-fuel engine, in addition to the rotor sail, Norsepower said.

A rotor sail is a modernised form of Flettner rotor based on the Magnus effect, which creates air pressure to cause spinning.

Under favourable wind conditions, the rotor sails will enable the vessel's main engine to throttle back and consume less fuel while providing enough power to maintain speed.
