Northern Lights, a carbon capture and storage partnership between Equinor, Shell, and TotalEnergies, has welcomed the Northern Phoenix—delivered by Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore.
The vessel will sail from China to Norway while running tests on its energy-saving systems. After reaching the Øygarden terminal in western Norway, it will undergo mechanical commissioning before beginning regular operations.
It will carry captured CO2 from Yara to Øygarden, where the gas will then move through a pipeline and settle into permanent storage 2,600 meters below the seabed.
The final ship in the class is scheduled to join the fleet in 2026.
The first two vessels, Northern Pioneer and Northern Pathfinder, were built by Dalian Shipbuilding Industry, while the last two—Phoenix and the upcoming fourth unit—are from Dalian Shipbuilding Offshore.
