The foldable wing-sail design allows larger vessels to navigate under bridges and access port infrastructure without constraints, the company explained.
Designed for oil, gas and chemical tankers, bulk carriers and ROPAX vessels, the rigid sail wind-assisted propulsion system can be retrofitted or installed on newbuilds, OceanWings added.
The company estimates a 25-year lifespan for the sail system and projects average fuel savings of 1.3 mt/day, claiming it can achieve “double-digit fuel and emission reductions” on long voyages.
OceanWings noted that this concept was also approved by the classification society DNV in October.
