An ultramax is a type of bulk carrier with a carrying capacity typically between 60,000 to 65,000 DWT, designed for cargo transport in medium-sized ports.

The 64,000 DWT vessels will be capable of running on both methanol and conventional marine fuels.

Two of the vessels are jointly contracted with Nihon Shipyard and Imabari Shipbuilding for delivery in 2028 and 2029, while the other two are contracted with Mitsui for the same timeframe. Japan’s Nihon Shipyard will construct all four vessels.

Additionally, the company has signed an agreement with Mitsui to procure an unspecified quantity of green methanol. This deal will help the company meet upcoming FuelEU Maritime regulation and anticipated IMO global greenhouse gas fuel standard for marine fuels, according to Pacific Basin.

The company is also negotiating with various green fuel suppliers and producers to expand its access to bio-methanol, e-methanol and biofuels.
