German tech giant Siemens has built two units - one designed to handle cruise ships and ferries and the other for only ferries.
MSC Euribia, a cruise ship owned by Mediterranean Shipping Company’s (MSC) arm MSC Cruises, is testing the facility for regular use in the future, said Port of Kiel authority.
“By 2030 at the latest, we want to supply all ships at our berths with green shore power. For the coming season, we plan to supply 40 cruise calls alone via the newly opened facility at Ostuferhafen [terminal], with a further 60 calls at Ostseekai [terminal]," said Dirk Claus, managing director at Seehafen Kiel.
