E-methanol, or synthetic methanol, is made using 100% biogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) and green hydrogen.

“Switching to alternative fuels for ships reduces greenhouse gases (GHGs), improves air quality, and helps protect the marine environment,” Port of Tallinn’s chief executive Valdo Kalm says.

The Port of Tallinn aims to achieve zero emissions from docked ships by 2050. Expanding the availability of alternative fuels will help make shipping more environmentally friendly and lower the carbon footprint of ports, he adds.

Muuga Harbour is located on Estonia's northern coast about 17 kilometres east of Tallinn.

Protio also plans to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) at the port.

However, the duo has not yet revealed any further details about the project, such as production capacity or timeline.
