The company will provide shore-side electricity for cruise ships at Terminal V (Virgin Voyages), F (Carnival Cruise Line), A (Royal Caribbean International), B (Norwegian Cruise Line) and MSC Cruises.

PowerCon has set up a subsidiary - PowerCon USA - to manage the project. The company claims that the combined shore power system will be the largest of its kind globally once completed by the end of this year.

In February 2021, Miami-Dade County inked an agreement to bring shore power to PortMiami in collaboration with electric company Florida Power & Light Company and a consortium of six cruise companies comprising Carnival Cruise Line, Disney Cruise Line, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean International, and Virgin Voyages.

Shore power or “cold ironing” has been gaining traction across port operators and ship operators globally to reduce emissions while a ship is berthed.

In other developments in the shore power space, Port Everglades in the US and Portsmouth International Port in England have unveiled their plans this month to offer shore power to vessels.
