This is the highest number of LNG-capable vessels ordered in a single month since April 2022, Martin Christian Wold, the chief executive of DNV’s bunker delivery platform Ofiniti said in a social media post.
Currently, there are 607 LNG-capable vessels in operation, with an additional 115 scheduled for delivery by the end of this year, according to DNV's database.
A further 632 LNG-capable vessels are on order, with deliveries planned towards 2033.
Orders for methanol-capable vessels have also surged, increasing from eight in September to 29 in October. There are now 43 methanol-capable vessels in operation, with 19 more scheduled for delivery by the end of this year.
A total of 342 methanol-capable vessels are on order for deliveries towards 2033, the DNV database shows.
The number of ammonia-capable ships in operation and on order remains unchanged from last month, with only two in operation and 25 scheduled for delivery by 2027.
Meanwhile, two new orders for LPG-capable vessels were recorded last month. According to the DNV, there are currently 121 LPG-capable ships in operation and another 84 on order for deliveries towards 2028. These orders are specifically for LPG carriers or LPG/ammonia carriers, conceptualised to use boil-off gas for propulsion.
It should be noted, however, that ammonia and LPG have not yet been commercially implemented as marine fuels, as regulations governing their use on ships are still under development.
The DNV database also shows that three vessels equipped with hydrogen-capable internal combustion engines (ICEs) are in operation and another 10 are on order for delivery by 2026. These vessels are mostly tugboats or offshore service vessels, used exclusively in short-sea shipping.
