Red Sea: Houthi missile hits another cargo ship

June 13, 2024

Iran-aligned Houthi forces launched one unmanned surface vessel (USV) in the Red Sea on 12 June, which struck a container vessel, the US Central Command (CENTCOM) said.

The Yemen-based militant group hit M/V Tutor, a Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned and operated vessel with the missile, CENTCOM reported. The impact caused “severe flooding and damage to the engine room,” CENTCOM said.

M/V Tutor most recently docked in Russia,” CENTCOM added.

The Yemeni militia’s spokesperson Yahya Sare’e claimed the attack on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).

Separately, the US naval forces destroyed three anti-ship cruise missile (ASCM) launchers and one uncrewed aerial system (UAS) launched from a Houthi-controlled area of Yemen over the Red Sea.

USVs are drones that the Houthis have been repeatedly using to attack commercial vessels in the Red Sea.

These repeated attacks on commercial vessels in the Red Sea have heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and raised safety concerns in the global shipping industry.
