The partnership aims at creating “commercially viable” ways that can aid in decarbonising the shipping industry. This includes the development of fuel cell systems integrated with carbon capture technology.
The collaboration also intends to promote the use of hydrogen and facilitate ship propulsion technologies.
RINA will be an approving body and certifier in the partnership. ABB will develop ways to utilise new technologies and devise ways “to increase fuel efficiency in existing systems” in tandem with “owners, designers, and shipyards.”
“There are many challenges to overcome, and collaboration is crucial if we are to succeed in addressing them to protect the environment,” said Giosuè Vezzuto, executive vice president marine at RINA.
“Bringing new, commercially viable solutions to the market is a long process that requires close collaboration between class societies and technology providers," says ABB Marine & Ports business line manager Rune Braastad.
