The oil tanker is scheduled to set sail in early 2024, says the Chinese rotor sail technology firm Dealfeng.

The rotor sails are made of lightweight and strong material and come with an automatic control system. The pressure difference around rotating rotors generates a forward thrust while the vessel is sailing.

With this technology, the vessel is expected to achieve around 8% fuel and GHG emission reductions, the duo claims.

This system also offers the option to lower the power and energy consumption of the ship’s main engine when wind conditions are favourable. Thereby, reducing fuel consumption while maintaining speed and travel time.

The new tanker is part of an ongoing partnership between the Chinese ship manufacturer Haiyue Shipping and Dealfeng, forged in October 2022. Under the deal, the duo was to build the 5,000-dwt oil tanker equipped with rotor sails.

Apart from this, Dealfeng has also signed another agreement with Offshore Oil Engineering to install two sets of rotor sails on a 25,000-DWT deck carrier. According to Dealfeng, the vessel will achieve fuel savings of around 10% and is expected to be delivered by 20 December.
