Rotterdam conventional bunker sales dipped by 9% in 2023

Rotterdam’s total conventional bunker fuel sales declined by 9% last year, according to bunker sales figures released by the Port of Rotterdam.

Changes in Rotterdam bunker fuel sales from 2022 to 2023:

  • Total sales down by 837,000 mt to 8.88 million mt
  • VLSFO sales down by 476,000 mt to 3.38 million mt
  • HSFO sales down by 12,000 mt to 3.09 million mt
  • ULSFO sales down by 95,000 mt to 795,000 mt
  • MGO sales down by 192,000 mt to 960,000 mt
  • MDO sales down by 61,000 mt to 654,000 mt


About 8.88 million mt of conventional bunker fuels were sold in 2023, marking the lowest level since 2019.

Total VLSFO sales in 2023 hit the lowest level since the IMO’s 0.50% sulphur cap came into effect. VLSFO sales slumped by 12% to 3.38 million mt in 2023, and ULSFO sales fell by 11%.

The port’s HSFO sales fell slightly last year, but have remained above 3 million mt for the second consecutive year.

Total sales of marine distillates, which include marine gasoil and marine diesel oil, dropped by 14% to 1.61 million mt in 2023.

Singapore maintains its position as the biggest bunker hub with 51.27 million mt sold. Rotterdam (8.88 million mt) holds the second spot in volumes sold, with Fujairah (7.36 million mt) and Zhoushan (7.05 million mt) closely following.
