The cargo tank and hull structure of the 200,000-cbm capacity ammonia carrier has been designed by SHI, while it has been approved by KR after “thoroughly reviewing domestic and international regulations.”
The ammonia carrier will be equipped with a specialised ammonia fuel system that takes into account the unique properties of ammonia. SHI has designed fuel supply, ventilation, and gas monitoring systems specifically for the ammonia fuel system. The basic design was finalised to comply with classification rules, ensuring the safety of the enlarged tank and hull.
Major shipping companies worldwide are investing in ammonia as they strive to decarbonise the maritime industry. SHI and Swiss marine engine manufacturer WinGD recently entered into a partnership to develop ammonia-fuelled engines for forthcoming newbuild vessels.
