A feeder vessel transports cargo between smaller regional ports and larger hub ports, connecting them to major shipping routes.
The 3,100 TEU vessel, designed by German shipbuilder Technology, will use ammonia in its two-stroke main propulsion engine.
This design builds on LR's earlier approval in May of Seaspan's feeder ship design, which can be converted to run on ammonia as fuel during its operational lifecycle.
“Although ammonia has advantages, it also has challenges that need to be overcome so we can operate ammonia dual-fuelled ships safely and economically,” Seaspan’s senior vice president Peter Jackson says.
