The signatories of the operational efficiency ambition statement include the classification society Lloyd’s Register, A.P. Moller Maersk’s tanker arm Maersk Tankers, Port of Rotterdam, and shipping majors Cargill Ocean Transportation, Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Group) and Stena Bulk, among others.

The vessel optimisation strategies can decrease annual fuel consumption by 20% and reduce annual carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by more than 200 million mt, shipping non-profit Global Maritime Forum (GMF) claims.

GMF has identified five key action areas to improve operational efficiency of vessels. These include data collection and transparency, charter contract changes and pilot projects to improve operational efficiency of ships.

“Capitalising fully on operational efficiency will be a prerequisite to achieving the 2030, 2040, and 2050 emissions reduction targets,” Jesse Fahnestock, the Global Maritime Forum’s project director for decarbonisation said.
