Green methanol is a type of methanol that is mainly produced using renewable energy sources.
Green methanol from Shanghai Electric’s demonstration project in Taonan, Jilin province, will be transported to Shanghai Port for bunkering.
This project is described as China’s first commercial-scale green methanol initiative covering research, production, and application, according to the Shanghai Municipality.
It aims to achieve a total production capacity of 250,000 mt, with the first 50,000-mt phase set to begin production this July. Full capacity is expected by 2027.
However, the specific renewable source used for production has not been disclosed.
In March, Shanghai Electric partnered with French shipping company CMA CGM to supply bio-methanol for its dual-fuel methanol-powered vessels at Shanghai Port. Earlier, in January, port operator Shanghai International Port Group (SIPG) announced that A.P. Moller-Maersk’s vessel Annie Maersk received 3,000 mt of methanol bunkers during cargo unloading operations.
