Southwest Maritime orders a pair of LPG dual-fuel gas carriers

Gas transportation company Southwest Maritime has ordered two LPG dual-fuel very large ammonia carriers (VLACs) from Jiangnan Shipyard, a subsidiary of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC).

Each vessel will have a capacity of 90,000 cbm and will be designed to operate on both LPG and conventional marine fuels.

The company has not disclosed further details, including the delivery schedule or intended deployment.

The global LPG-capable fleet currently comprises 141 vessels, with another 91 expected to be delivered by 2028. Of the existing fleet, 138 are LPG carriers and three are LPG/ammonia carriers, according to classification society DNV.

Recently, Japan-based shipping company Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK Line) launched an LPG dual-fuel large-scale LPG carrier, Lucent Pathfinder.
