The announcement follows its partnership with Associated British Ports (ABP) Southampton. The California-based firm is now in discussions with Harwich Haven Authority to expand its system in the UK.

STAX’s system works by capturing exhaust gases like nitrogen oxides (NOx) and particulate matter (PM), directly from a vessel’s funnel. It connects to the vessel using steel pipes and hoses, either from a barge or a land-based exhaust-gas treatment unit, preventing emissions from being released into the air.

“STAX’s barge-based emissions capture and control technology offers ports an immediate and flexible complement to shore power,” the company said.

This process does not require any additional equipment to be installed on the vessel itself. The technology can capture up to 99% of PM and 95% of NOx, STAX Engineering claims.

The company is also part of PortZero, a four-company consortium that recently secured £1.1 million ($1.5 million) funding from the UK government through its Clean Maritime Demonstration Competition.

Last year, STAX Engineering signed service agreements with major California ports, including Los Angeles, Long Beach, Hueneme, Benicia, Richmond and Oakland, to support exhaust emissions capture.
