The delivered biofuel stem comprised a blend of 25% rapeseed methyl ester (RME) and 75% conventional marine gasoil.

"The RME used for this operation was a first-generation feedstock," Jenny Eriksson, bunker trader at Stena Oil told ENGINE.

The bunkering operation of cargo ship Oslo Wave 3 was conducted off the Swedish Port of Gothenburg, Eriksson confirmed.

"As sustainability concerns gain momentum within the shipping sector and emissions regulations become more stringent, the necessity of diversifying fuel alternatives beyond traditional selections takes on added significance," Eriksson said. "Consequently, we anticipate a steady growth in the biofuels market."

She also confirmed that Stena Oil can provide biofuel blends in multiple ports throughout Scandinavia through barges or trucks. According to Eriksson, the company operates predominantly off Skaw and Gothenburg, but can supply off the west and south coasts of Sweden, the Danish east coast and west and south coasts of Norway.

Stena Oil can supply first and second-generation biofuels, depending on client requirements, she added.

The biofuel supplier has been qualified under the International Sustainability & Carbon Certification (ISCC)-EU scheme and ISCC Plus certification.

ISCC is a global certification system that sets standards for the sustainable production, sourcing and trade of all kinds of bio-based feedstocks and biofuels. The ISCC-EU certification provides an assurance that the biofuel blends supplied by Stena Oil are sustainably produced from biomass and meet the legal requirements of the EU’s Renewable Energy Directive.
