The authority has not provided any explanation for the move.

The surcharges will be applied in addition to existing transit tolls. The measure covers containerships, crude oil tankers, petroleum product tankers, dry bulk vessels, LPG carriers, LNG carriers, chemical and other liquid bulk carriers, general cargo ships, multipurpose vessels, heavy-lift ships, general cargo/heavy-lift vessels, multipurpose/heavy-lift vessels, RoRo ships, vehicle carriers, special floating units and other vessel types, according to SCA circulars.

The surcharge rates vary by vessel category, ranging from 12% to 37% above the applicable base transit fees.

“These surcharges are temporary and can be either amended or cancelled according to the Maritime Industry market conditions,” the SCA said.
