Sydrogen has received a Basic Design Assessment (BDA) certificate for its hydrogen fuel cell system.
The hydrogen fuel cell systems have been developed in collaboration with Shanghai Hydrogen Propulsion Technology (SHPT), Sydrogen said.
“The system is designed to provide reliable power for a wide range of maritime applications, from commercial vessels to offshore platforms,” the company added.
These certifications establish the groundwork for full Type Approval, a mandatory certification for maritime hydrogen fuel cell use, and eventual installation onboard commercial vessels.
Hydrogen fuel cell systems are gaining popularity among shipowners as they look for technologies that can reduce conventional fuel use and enhance sustainability with hydrogen propulsion.
When installed on ships, these systems are expected to be effective in reducing CO2 and other greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions.
