Ferry-operator Tallink has supplied its shuttle ship MyStar with bio-LNG six times in recent months, the company said in a LinkedIn post.

The bio-LNG was supplied by Estonian energy firm Elenger. The company’s bunkering arm Elenger Marine operates a fleet of trucks and offers bunkering services both at sea and on land, according to its website.

“Our cooperation with Elenger has been smooth, and we are able to gradually increase the use of bio-LNG depending on its availability and price. Our goal is to fully replace the LNG needs of both MyStar and Megastar with bio-LNG within the next year,” said Tallink’s chief executive Paavo Nõgene.

MyStar and Megastar ferry passengers between Finland's Helsinki and Estonia's Tallinn. Both vessels are dual-fuel and can run on LNG and marine diesel, according to Tallink.

BioLNG, or liquefied biomethane (LBM), can be used as a drop-in fuel on LNG vessels. It is the same molecule as fossil LNG and does not typically require any modifications to engines or infrastructure to use.

Tallink says it does not plan to increase ferry ticket prices.
