While trading conglomerate Sumitomo Corporation and the shipping company K Line are based in Japan, Hilcorp Alaska is a US-based energy firm.
Under the study, the trio will explore the feasibility of transporting CO2 from Japan to Alaska in the United States, using liquified CO2 vessels. The study will cover technical requirements for building liquefied CO2 carriers.
The study is part of the Japanese and US governments’ endeavour to evaluate the potential for cross-border CO2 transport between Japan and Alaska. The two countries will examine the potential for CO2 storage in Alaska. The total storage capacity of the CCS project is expected to be 50 gigatons.
