The Silver Nova is owned by Royal Caribbean and was bunkered with 900 mt of LNG by Titan’s bunker barge Green Zeebrugge.
“96% of the total volume delivered was used for bunkering purposes,” Titan says.
German shipbuilder Meyer Werft and the Dutch port authority Groningen Seaports also took part in the bunker operation.
A gas-up operation was also conducted on the Silver Nova, along with bunkering. LNG-fuelled vessels periodically require to gas-free their onboard LNG storage tanks. During gassing up, inert gas in the cargo tanks is replaced with warm LNG vapor. This is done to remove carbon dioxide and to complete drying of the tanks.
LNG has been gaining popularity among shipowners. The global LNG-fuelled fleet is currently made up of 411 vessels, with another 132 expected to join this year, classification society DNV data shows.
LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a greenhouse gas (GHG) compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
