Both companies see methanol as a promising alternative marine fuel for vessels in Singapore, which could help to accelerate the shipping industry's energy transition.

This initiative will help to "advance our development of methanol as a safe, efficient and scalable bunkering solution in Singapore," TotalEnergies Marine Fuels' vice president Louise Tricoire says.

Methanol emerged as the second most popular alternative fuel after LNG, for marine vessels in 2022. TotalEnergies Marine Fuels claims that in the containership segment, orders for dual-fuel methanol vessels have increased faster than other types.

Meanwhile, the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) expects to start the first methanol bunkering operation in Singapore from the third quarter of this year.
