A diesel-electric hybrid vessel is fitted with a diesel engine driving an electric generator that feeds electric traction to a motor and helps propel it forward.
The Vertom Cyta is the second in a series of eight diesel-electric hybrid dry bulk cargo vessels built by the Dutch shipyard Thecla Bodewes. Itwill undergo sea trials in the North Sea after being commissioned in Kampen, Netherlands in the coming weeks.
These vessels feature a “modular propulsion concept” that “is designed to be ready for future developments, by means of the ability to make the vessels’ propulsion methanol-electric or hydrogen-electric and to further reduce carbon emissions,” says Vertom.
The first in the series, Vertom Patty, was launched in September last year.
The company recently ordered two of these vessels from Thecla Bodewes, bringing the total to eight.
Delivery of the remaining six vessels is anticipated between 2023-2025.
