COSCO Shipping Heavy Industry, a subsidiary of Chinese shipping major COSCO Shipping Lines, will build the containerships in Yangzhou city in China. These vessels are due for delivery in 2025.
One vessel in the series will be installed with a methanol-fuelled engine during construction. The other three vessels will have a methanol-ready engine, which will be converted to use methanol before they enter service, WinGD says.
WinGD claims these vessels will be among the first methanol-fuelled container ships to be built in China.
The Switzerland-based engine maker is also developing ammonia-fuelled engines that will enable shipowners to use cleaner marine fuels on their vessels.
