Yantai’s dual-fuel methanol vessel design gets ABS approval
The American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) has issued an approval in principle (AiP) to Yantai CIMC Raffles Offshore for its design of a dual-fuel methanol heavy-duty offshore wind turbine installation vessel (WTIV).

The vessel will be equipped with a dual-fuel methanol engine, which can run on methanol and conventional marine fuels, the Chinese shipbuilding firm Yantai said.
A WTIV vessel is primarily used to install offshore wind turbines and operates in certain areas. This means that the vessel will likely consume less methanol compared to bigger methanol-fuelled ships that sail longer voyages. The vessel, once constructed, will be deployed in Europe.
According to classification society DNV data, the methanol-fuelled fleet is made up of 29 vessels with another 32 expected to join this year.
