Although the immediate impact that these small-scale electric vessels will have on global greenhouse gas emissions might be limited, the trial holds significance as it provides crucial technical and operational insights that can inform the development of larger-scale electric vessels in the future.
An electric light cargo vessel is a small, electrically powered ship designed for transporting goods, typically over short distances.
The Hydromover is equipped with swappable batteries and can carry up to 25 tonnes of cargo. It is Singapore's first fully electric cargo vessel, YGT claims.
Developed by the Goal Zero Consortium and funded by the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA) and the Singapore Maritime Institute (SMI), the Hydromover began its inaugural commercial trial on 26 August, after being handed over by MarinEV at the Lita Ocean shipyard for offshore logistics services.
In the coming months, harbour craft operators in Singapore will have the opportunity to trial charter the vessel as part of their operational fleets.
Six maritime companies, including Lita Ocean, DM Sea Logistics, OPL Services, Kanlian Ferry, RW Marine Services, and Tian San Shipping, have expressed interest in electrifying their fleets and have provided letters of intent to participate in the trials, YGT adds.
