Bound4blue has installed a 22-meter-long suction sail on a general cargo vessel Fluvius Tavy at Astander Shipyard in Santander, Spain.
The installation builds on an earlier project on Amasus-operated Eems Traveller, where two 17-metre suction sails were installed in July 2023.
Wind-assisted propulsion systems (WAPS), like the suction sails, have been gaining popularity among shipowners as they look for technologies that can boost vessel performance and reduce fuel use.
Bound4blue has previously installed its suction sails on vessels owned by other shipping companies like Odfjell, Louis Dreyfus Armateurs and Eastern Pacific Shipping (EPS), it said.
The sails draw air across an aerodynamic surface to generate lift and improve propulsive efficiency, reducing vessel emissions and fuel consumption, bound4blue explained.
The suction sails can be installed on all types of ships, including tankers, bulk carriers, Ro-Ro vessels, cruise ships, ferries, gas carriers, etc., the company added.
