The vessel, MV Yampu, a diesel-electric hybrid, delivered at Jiangjiang Nanyang Shipyard, is set to transition to full electric operations by 2031.

The vessel currently runs on both, conventional fuel and batteries, in a ratio of 50/50, with the use of biofuels also being explored, CSL said to ENGINE.

"Power is generated via the auxiliary engines and the batteries, and the main propulsion is ensured through two azimuth thrusters powered by permanent magnet electric motors," according to the company.

The vessel is expected to reduce diesel consumption by 25% and cut Scope 1 emissions by 40% compared to the ship it replaces, the company claims.

The company added that by 2031, full electric operations are projected to deliver emissions reductions of more than 90%.
