GoodFuels considers fuel tracing vital to CII validation

Dutch biofuel supplier GoodFuels emphasised that through fuel tracing technologies shipowners can validate their vessels compliance with the IMO’s carbon intensity indicator (CII) regulation.

GoodFuels says that fuel tracing technologies such as physical fuel tracers or digital physical tracers can be used to monitor and track marine fuels' lifecycle emissions.

For instance, fuel tracing can keep track of the origin of the various blending components used to produce biofuels for shipping, GoodFuels said.

The trackers also provide accurate emissions information for each vessel operated by shipowners. The IMO's CII regulation came into force from this year and mandates shipowners to calculate an Energy Efficiency Existing Ship Index (EEXI) for each vessel to grant them a CII rating between A-E, wherein A is the best rated.

Last month, Singapore based Global Centre for Maritime Decarbonisation (GCMD) used various fuel tracing technologies, such as physical tracing with fingerprinting and lab testing, to validate lifecycle emissions of biofuels delivered during its biofuel pilot programme.
