Bunker supplier KEYS Bunkering West Japan’s (KEYS) bunker vessel, KEYS Azalea, delivered an undisclosed amount of fossil LNG to NYK Line’s car carrier, Daisy Leader.
The operation marked KEYS Azalea’s first bunkering operation after its delivery earlier this month and also the first ship-to-ship LNG bunkering operation in the western Japan region, KEYS claims.
The LNG was shipped from Tobata LNG terminal of Kitakyushu LNG, a subsidiary of Japan’s Kyuden Group.
“Compared to heavy oil, the conventional marine fuel, LNG is expected to reduce emissions of sulfur oxides (SOx) by approximately 100%, nitrogen oxides (NOx) by approximately 80%, and carbon dioxide (CO2) by approximately 30%,” KEYS claims.
LNG can curb carbon dioxide emissions by about a quarter compared to conventional bunker fuels. But its methane emissions can be 36 times more potent as a GHG compared to carbon dioxide over a century, according to a World Bank study.
