Moeve, formerly known as Cepsa, plans to develop facilities that will produce biomethane from organic waste for use in transport and other sectors. These 30 plants are expected to have a combined capacity of 4 terawatt-hours (TWh) of biomethane annually. This roughly equates to around 260,000 mt/year.

The plants will be located across Spain’s Andalusia, Catalonia and Galicia regions.

Moeve has partnered with biogas producer InproEner to develop five of these plants, which are expected to be operational by 2029. Each of them will have a capacity of approximately 50 gigawatt-hours per year (GWh/year), totaling 250 GWh/year, or around 16,000 mt/year of biomethane.

It plans to develop up to 15 of the remaining 25 plants in partnership with Spanish asset manager Kira Ventures. First five of these 15 plants will be operational by 2026.

The final 10 plants will be developed in collaboration with waste management firm PreZero. The first of these, located in Huelva, will have a capacity of up to 100 GWh/year (approximately 6,500 mt/year) of biomethane.

Moeve already supplies conventional fuels, LNG and biofuels for bunkering. This project could position it to add biomethane to its future bunkering portfolio.
