Skovgaard Energy has jointly developed the facility with CO2 reduction technology company Topsoe and wind energy firm Vestas.

The integrated green hydrogen and green ammonia plant is designed to produce up to 5,000 mt/year of green ammonia.

The plant uses both wind and solar power as renewable energy inputs to drive electrolysis and ammonia synthesis.

The technology has been designed to adapt to the natural fluctuations in renewable power generation to allow the system to operate flexibly without relying heavily on energy or hydrogen storage.

The companies said this approach helps optimise production and improve the cost-effectiveness of green ammonia by reducing the costs of green hydrogen or renewable electricity storage.

“By working across the value chain, we are accelerating green ammonia as a pathway to diversify energy supply and decarbonise energy-intensive industries and long-distance transport, including shipping and agriculture,” said Kim Hedegaard, chief executive of Power-to-X at Topsoe.
