Toyota books emissions cuts from UECC shipments

January 16, 2026

Toyota Motor Europe (TME) claimed 22,148 mt of CO2-equivalent (mtCO2e) of GHG emissions reductions from Norwegian shipping line United European Car Carriers (UECC) in 2024.

UECC offers a low-emission shipping service that allows customers, including Toyota Motor Europe (TME), to purchase emissions savings linked to voyages carried out using liquefied biomethane (LBM) and biofuel blends by paying a premium.

Under the scheme, UECC bunkers its LNG- and conventionally-fuelled vessels with LBM or biofuel blends on selected European voyages.

The resulting emissions savings are then allocated to customers using a mass-balance system, which allows them to claim reductions, even if their actual cargo is transported on conventionally fuelled vessels.

Customers can use the purchased emissions savings to offset Scope 3 emissions across their supply chains.

For TME, UECC allocated emissions savings equivalent to 22,148 mtCO2e from the use of LBM and biofuel blends across its dual-fuel fleet.

“The reduction of 22,148 tonnes of CO2e… was achieved with transport of 54,991 vehicles on UECC vessels over the five-month period from August to December 2024,” UECC said.

TME is expected to claim a further 57,448 mtCO2e of emissions reductions in 2025 from “UECC shipments of vehicles from Toyota manufacturing plants in Turkey and the Czech Republic to ports in Northern Europe,” it added.

Other carmakers participating in UECC’s low-emission shipping service include Jaguar Land Rover, Renault and Ford of Europe.
