The 13,000 TEU boxships were named Kota Elok and Kota Elan at the Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard where they were constructed. The vessels are capable of operating on both LNG and conventional fuels.
These are the first two of 13 LNG dual-fuel vessels being built for PIL with the same capacity.
The company said it will deploy the vessels on the Asia-South America trade corridor because it has seen strong and sustained demand growth on this route.
It said the vessels’ hull form will improve hydrodynamic performance while its hull coating can reduce fuel consumption.
Additionally, the Kota Elok is designed with a bow windshield that can improve aerodynamics and fuel efficiency.
Recently, another of PIL’s new LNG dual-fuel vessel, the Kota Ocean, completed a LNG bunker operation in Shanghai.
Among alternatively fuelled vessels, LNG is the most adopted technology, with around 892 vessels in operation globally, and another 671 on order with deliveries scheduled through 2030.
